  • Basically, you will pay between €10 (Zone A) and €20 per mule (Zone B) for most places but please note that even though the sign says 4 pieces of luggage, what it actually means is 2 suitcases and 2 pieces of hand luggage. So if there are four of you, most likely you will need 2 mules.

About Hydra

According to the findings in the “Kolokotroni cave”, Hydra has been inhabited since the Neolithic Era. During the Mycenaean period, the basic colonies of the island were Choriza and Episkopi. During the ancient times, Hydra was under the occupation of Ermioni and Trizina. The island began to develop naval and commercial activities from the 17th century, while at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century it ensured its regime of self-government an action which led to obtaining wealth and a strong fleet. The contribution of Hydra’s fleet to the War of Independence in 1821 was enormous, as it helped the Greek forces to dominate in the Aegean Sea. Hydra is located 38 nm away from Piraeus.

  • The entrance of the port, where the cannons are.
  • The old stone gun powder warehouse, which today is housing the port authority.
  • The monastery of Kimiseos tis Theotokou (Assumption of the Virgin), a three-naved domed basilica with two marbled bell towers (middle of 17th century). Part of the monastery houses the Town Hall, while in the old cells functions a small Ecclesiastic and Byzantine Museum.
  • The Tsamados Manor, housing the National Merchant Marine Academy.
  • The Tobazi mansion, property of the School of Fine Arts since 1936.
  • The Georgios Kountouriotis’ manor, which is rising among the pine trees. Built in the end of 18th century, this manor provides an exceptional example of the first period of Neoclassicism.
  • The Pavlos Kountouriotis’ Square, where you will see the bust of the Greek politician.
  • Periptero: the western gun settlement of the port and one of the most beautiful places in Hydra.
  • Kala Pigadia (Good Wells), a district that was named after the two wells that supplied with water the houses of the city for more than 200 years.
  • The hill of Kiafa, where the oldest district of the city is built, with stone houses, high walls and narrow lanes.
  • The church of Aghios Konstantinos Hydraios.
  • The church of Ypapanti, with its wood carved chancel and the popular religious icons.
  • The old church of Aghios Giannis Nisteutis, with amazing frescos of the 18th century.
  • The female monastery of Aghia Eupraxia and the monastery of Prophet Ilias, where Th. Kolokotronis was imprisoned for some period. Visitors can enjoy the view of the Hydra port and the coasts of Peloponnese.

Museums

Ecclesiastic and Byzantine Museum: The Museum is housed on the premises of the monastery of Koimisi tis Theotokou, in the old cells. It is a small museum which exhibits vestments, relics, offerings and icons mainly from the 18th century.

Historical Archive: Here the visitor has the opportunity to see some important relics dating back to the Balkan Wars and the First and Second World Wars, as well as manuscripts and codes dating back to the 18th and 19th century. In the same area functions a library with valuable editions and a gallery exposing paintings created by major artists.

Lazarou Kountourioti House: It operates as an outhouse of the National History Museum. The visitor of this historic manor will have the opportunity to see heirlooms of the Kountouriotis family, paintings of Pericles and Konstantinos Byzantios, as well as exhibits that belong to the historical and folklore collections of the National History Museum.
Museum of Post-Byzantine Art and History of Hydra: It operates in Georgios Kountouriotis house. The collection includes personal items and belongings of the Kountouriotis family as well as exhibits associated with the modern history of Hydra.
Exhibition and Concert Municipal Hall "Melina Merkouri", where works of famous artists are exposed throughout the year.

  • Epitaf procession in Kaminia, on Holy Friday, which is finalized by a boat in the sea.
  • The famous carnival of Hydra.
  • "Miaouleia”: a three-day festival organized every year in honor of admiral Andreas Miaoulis. It includes folklore dances, torchlight races, boat-races and athletic competition. The end of the festival specified with impressive fireworks and the imitation of Turkish flagship conflagration.
  • International Festival of Marionettes every July.
  • Celebration of the patron saint of Hydra, Neo-martyr Aghios Konstantinos Hydraios, on November 14th.
  • Feast in honor of the eight saints protecting the island, on June 24th. There is also is a feast in honor of Panaghia (Holy Mother) of Faneromeni or Navmachon (naval fighters), on August 15th.
