History of Hydra
According to the findings in the “Kolokotroni cave”, Hydra has been inhabited since the Neolithic Era. During the Mycenaean period, the basic colonies of the island were Choriza and Episkopi. During the ancient times, Hydra was under the occupation of Ermioni and Trizina. The island began to develop naval and commercial activities from the 17th century, while at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century it ensured its regime of self-government an action which led to obtaining wealth and a strong fleet. The contribution of Hydra’s fleet to the War of Independence in 1821 was enormous, as it helped the Greek forces to dominate in the Aegean Sea. Hydra is located 38 nm away from Piraeus.
