Livorno was established in the second 50% of the sixteenth century by the Medici when, for military and business reasons, the angling town which had grown up round Matilde di Canossa's keep (Mastio di Matilde di Canossa) quickly ended up one of the Mediterranean's fundamental ports.
Indications of the "Countries", which added to the birth and development of a vital port known all through the Mediterranean, are to be found in places of worship, memorable graveyards, chronicles and nourishment.
Guarding the Port is the Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress) with its monumental Matilde's Keep (Mastio di Matilde), associated with inner conduits to the Fortezza Nuova (New Fortress) in the core of the city.
